About the Programme 

The Aer Lingus Maintenance & Engineering apprenticeship is a structured four-year training programme that allows successful candidates to become a fully qualified aircraft maintenance engineer.  The apprenticeship is a mixture of on-the-job, practical experience phases based at Hangar 6 in Dublin Airport and off-the-job, mostly theoretical phases run by Solas in conjunction with Shannon Aviation Maintenance School and Technological University Dublin 


Entry Requirements 

  • 18 years of age by the start date of the programme (Usually Sept) 
  • Junior Certificate and/or Leaving Certificate (preferred) 
  • Fluent in English both written and spoken 
  • Eligible to live and work in the EU 
  • Able to undergo a strict 5-year background check by the DAA 

Structure/Content of the Programme 

The programme is structured over four years and is divided into on-the-job (4) and off-the-job (3) phases. The on-the-job phases are conducted at Aer Lingus’ state of the art maintenance & engineering facility at Hangar 6 in Dublin Airport. Off-the-job phases are completed under SOLAS. The first two years of the programme are aimed at obtaining an EASA CAT A aircraft mechanic license. The off-the-job phase is usually completed at Shannon Aviation Maintenance School in Shannon, Co. Clare, which lasts nine months. The remaining two years are aimed at obtaining either a CAT B1 (mechanical) or B2 (avionics) license, and the off-the-job phases are completed at Technological University Dublin, Bolton Street campus.   

Benefits of the Programme 


Upon successful completion of the programme, the candidates will be awarded; 

  • QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft – Aircraft Mechanics. 
  • EASA Part66 CAT A & B1 or B2 Aircraft Mechanic Licenses.  

 The EASA licenses are recognised in all member states throughout the EU. Not does the license qualifiy one as an aircraft engineer, but they also open many doors in the aviation industry, which helps significantly for future career progression if desired.   


Candidates are paid an incremental training allowance over the four years of the programme. Aer Lingus pay during the on-the-job phases and SOLAS pay during the off-the-job phases.
