This year Ishka had a refreshing Aviation Finance conference that came with a real twist. With sunglasses and deck chairs at the ready, Ishka Fest Dublin had a jammed packed schedule with discussions on ABS financing, tax reform, modelling downturn scenarios, business angels to give advice and much more.

Day 1 saw an exciting start to the conference with superstar panellist Declan Ryan, co-founder of Ryanair, Tiger Airways, Viva Aerobus & the Viva Group taking to the stage. Breakout sessions in the afternoon saw a number of topical issues from the recent technical issues with engines and their impact on airlines and investors being addressed by companies such as GA Telesis, Rolls-Royce, ELFC and AerFin to Basel IV and its impact across different jurisdictions. Ending the day in true festival style, there was a BBQ with opportunity to network and continue discussion from some of the informative panels during the day.

Some of the key discussions from day 1 included “Is bigger always better?” and “What is the best size for a leasing company?”. There were mixed views on the topic but when it boiled down to it Lynn Guiney, Avolon, made the point “Culture will eat strategy for breakfast” and that it is important that during the growth phase of a business culture and interaction with customers and within the company is not lost or diluted. Relationships are key in this industry and it is important that they are not lost in a bid to be the biggest or the best. The importance of having a culture that will nurture talent and gender diversity and that has people moving up through the ranks, learning about the industry and the company for the future, was also noted.

Day 2 kicked off with a discussion around AFIC before some truly innovative conference style panels of “Deal or No Deal” and “The Ishka Duel” debate, allowing the audience engage and vote throughout the debate on the hot topic of ABS financing and where the trend is going. We also seen an informative insight to the secondary trading market and its role in the industry from leading aircraft lessors such as Goshawk, GECAS, SMBC Aviation Capital and AerCap.

With the festival theme engulfing the running of the event, and a host of leading industry professionals to network with, Ishka was a truly informative event with current issues being discussed openly and transparently from all angles of the industry.

Thank you to the Ishka team for running such an exciting and informative event and for having us there. We look forward to seeing what is in store for next year!
